MLS “Domestic Content”

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008

It seems as though things are looking up for American athletes in Major League Soccer. Last Friday, the FIFA Congress recommended a new rule limiting the number of “foreign” players in a starting lineup to five men. View the story.

So where’s the benefit for MLS players?

With the sport of soccer (football) deeply-rooted in practically every other part of the world, America’s best players are plucked from MLS for a shot on the world’s stage overseas. For example, out of the 33 players rostered on the U.S. National Team, only 16 also play on MLS clubs.

If this new rule passes, America’s best players, like Clint Dempsey and Carlos Bocanegra would likely return home for starting spots on MLS clubs, rather than sitting on the bench overseas. This means better competition, more compelling games, and a growing fan base.
